What a real post?

On Saturday, while dealing with a slight feverish, probably teething, toddler, we wake up to find out our hot water heater is leaking. [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith shuts off the water (as much as he can) to it and the gas. I call the Home Warranty company, since we have one (hey, the sellers had to pay for it, so why not) and they put in a service call. Saturday afternoon...still haven't heard from plumber. Call plumbing company from email, no response.

Sunday - still no hot water. Wash dishes in cold water. Really nice neighbor lets Aerith and I shower at their place (yay! I love our neighbors so much!!). We boil water on the stove and mix it with water in the tub to give Little Prince his nightly bath. Oh, did I mention that due to the way the bathtubs/shower heads are set up, no hot water pressure means no cold water can come out either? So we had to fill up the tub with the boiling water and water from the bathroom sink. Luckily the outside water isn't crazy cold since Texas is already getting nice and hot during the day.

Today - I work from home. I call the plumber and find out they can't come until Thursday or Friday at the earliest. I call back Home Warranty place and get a new plumber recommendation (I can do that, didn't know that). Call new plumber after waiting an hour. Now have appointment for Tuesday afternoon, which is better than the end of the week. Call a local plumber. They say they can have someone out for a free estimate sometime today. Call the warranty number for the water heater and find out that it's totally under warranty and we can just bring the old one back to Home Depot and get a new one, if we want to do it ourselves. This is looking more and more tempting. Call back Home Warranty place and am told 24 hours for an emergency, but this isn't considered one. Plumber that I called comes and gives several estimates, because of course some things are totally not up to code anymore and need to be changed. Say thank you very much.

So now we have the option of seeing if tomorrow's plumber can do this or trying to do it ourselves. I think we'll wait until tomorrow. One more day without hot water, they better fix it tomorrow. I sure treasure indoor plumbing now.

Also, we are now two-for-two with places we've owned and broken water heaters. At least this time it didn't flood our floors/carpet.

Front of houseWell, it looks as though in 10 days [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith and I will own a house in the suburbs of Austin. It's an amazing house. It's huge and we love it. The neighbourhood is great and the schools look good. It's also close to some of my mommy friends, a giganticly awesome park, and the outlet mall. I still can't believe that we're doing this. This could seriously be our forever-house. At minimum it is going to be our 5-to-10 year house.

We decided that we love the house that we are currently renting, but we didn't want to be renting anymore, and the market is really good for buying. We actually made what we thought was a reasonable an offer on our current house, but the owner totally rejected it. So we went looking elsewhere. When we saw the house we're buying for the first time, we both couldn't stop grinning the entire time. We made an offer. The owners countered. We took their counter. The inspection went well and our mortgage is now being sent to the underwriter (who I keep picturing as the Underminer from The Incredibles.

I'm still sort of in shock/denial about the whole thing. Somehow I didn't think we'd find a house that we love, especially not in the suburbs. And when we did I kept expecting the mortgage to fall through or the inspection to come back bad or something. But nothing did. Of course we haven't packed anything yet. But my dad will be in town soon to help out with things and we're going to have a month to move (provided no one breaks their arm this time around).

And while I'm excited, I'm also kind of conflicted. Every time we've moved before it's either been because the place we were renting got sold from under us, we were moving to another state, or we had so outgrown where we were living that we just felt like we were on top of each other all the time (and not in a good way). This is the first time we decided to move before I've felt like I was done living in the place. Rationally I know that we'd only have a few more years here before we'd want to move (or do a major renovation to the rooms/how they're organized/the living spaces) and that it's a great time to buy. But emotionally I'm very attached to this house. It's in the neighbourhood in Austin where I always wanted to live and I like our neighbours. I love the layout. I love the open floor plan, the high ceilings, and the windows. It's the house where I conceived and brought home my son to when he was born. I have a lot of fond memories of this house.

But as things start looking up, as we're starting to set up utilities at our new house, and look at what we need to buy (like a refridgerator), I'm getting more and more mentally and emotionally ready to start this new chapter of our lives as a family that owns their own house.

Had a good Memorial Day weekend.

On Friday [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith and I bought a little portable propane grill because we were tired of not having a grill and this one we can take with us :) So we grilled a lot over the weekend. There were hamburgers and hot dogs on Friday, chicken and zucchini on Saturday and bison steaks and asparagus on Sunday, and we're thinking more burgers and sausages this week. Also we tried grilling peaches for dessert on Saturday...they came out okay, but it probably would have turned out better if they had actually split in half when we cut them instead of resisting being pulled apart and falling apart/getting mushy in spectacular ways.

We also played a lot of World of Warcraft, which was what I wanted to do. Got my Tauren Druid a few more levels (so close to level 30 and a mount!) and I even made some money at the auction house! Ran our Blood Elves for a bit yesterday. Man, that guild is silly. Undercity is very confusing. Also, Ogrimmar (Ogrimmar...I got an Ogrimmar slaying knife, it has a +9 against Ogrimmar) doesn't have a Druid trainer but Silvermoon does.

Did go shopping on Saturday. We both got much needed new headphones for our iPhones. I can hear people again, yay!

Lastly, this weekend we started on Operation Reclaim Bathroom From Cats (ORCBRFC). Made some headway but it's still to early to tell who's winning.

Edit: I forgot to mention the joy of being woken up at 5am this morning by Natasha, who was right next to me, starting to cough up a hairball. She ran out into the living room and I ran out after her (to try to get to her in time to pick her up and get her on tile) and so then I had to clean up her hairball. Left me rather awake and made it hard to fall back asleep.

Yesterday was the first day where things really felt normal again.

I got up and went to work. At work I played on the internet, did a bit of work, and helped a person. yay. Also got to see people that I haven't seen in a month and feed some of them homemade chocolate-raspberry chip cookies :)

After work I did 30 min on an elliptical at the gym. Yay for me with the working out and stuff.

Then I ran a few errands both on campus and on the way home. Stopping by B&N to pick up the new book by [livejournal.com profile] otterdance that came out yesterday and then reading it while walking home totally counts as an errand.

I made dinner last night. I totally under estimated how long the chicken was going to take to cook, but it turned out okay anyway. One of these days I'll figure out this timing thing.

To end the night I went to karaoke with FireCat and [livejournal.com profile] zyrain. We were almost the whole rotation so we got to sing a lot. Various and sundry silliness was had. My favorite moment was when FireCat was singing "Stand By Me" and Zyrain and I ran up to either side of her and started swaying with her. It was sweet. :)

Ok, back to alternating between reading and watching lion cubs. At some point I'll get more work done.

made it back home in one piece. The cats are very happy to see us.

Did not go to Oak Street Cafe, but mommy made biscuits and pancakes and eggs, so it was all good.

Ride home was uneventful. We keep ending up stopping off at the same exit, either for food or gas, no matter which way we go.

Time for bed.

So, in the world of insanities, [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith quit his job yesterday. The owner of the company was a real dickhead and finally pushed him too far. The lead craftsman there quit today, so that has to say something about the working conditions. Actually, i'm really proud of [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith because the owner wanted them to sign a contract giving up their 15 minute morning and afternoon breaks and aerith stood up to him because that isn't fair to the workers (and is possibly illegal).

Due to him having no employment, we decided to leave early to go to New Orleans. Therefore we will be leaving tomorrow (Thursday) and returning to Austin a week from Saturday. Hurray for a long vacation. Even found someone to watch the cats, so we don't have to worry about bringing them along.

Spent yesterday after [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith got home from quitting running errands. Found an ice rink inside of a mall...very weird. Spent most of today cleaning up the apartment so the cats don't wreak it while we're out of town. With the exception of the study (which they're not really allowed into anyway) the place looks amazing! Some of the clean up was stuff left over from when we moved in and never put everything away. Now hopefully we can just keep it like that.

Off to clean the cat's water fountain and then pack for the trip.

Going home this weekend for sneeky's wedding. Haven't been home since before Katrina...I am a little a lot nervous. But I'm also excited. I've been told my house now looks completly different now. I'm scared to see it.

Well, must get back to class.

p.s. Guitar Hero II is awesome. TROGDOR strikes again!

p.p.s. Check out the new icon I made.
