It snowed overnight here in Austin, TX.

Being Central Texas we are completely unequipped to deal with this sort of weather. [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith didn't have to go into work today. My office is opening at 10am, but we were told that we shouldn't try to make it in if it looked bad and to work from home instead. I tried calling my chiropractor's office to see about my 10am appointment and got voice mail (they usually open at 7am on Fridays).

Here are some pictures of the massive amounts of snow that is shutting down the city.

Snow in the backyard (through the only window I have that doesn't have a screen)

Was in the 70s last weekend. Should be back into the upper 50s/low 60s this weekend.

Edit: we let the cats out. They actually wanted to go out and didn't want to come back in immediately, which surprised both of us. Here are a few pics of them.

Was it worse than that in other places? I'm just wondering because that looks like a sprinkling of snow (I'll believe that is unusual for central texas) and not somethign that would bother anybody... Though of course I do come from a place that grinds to a halt whenever there is snow but I think that *usually* it is a bit more than that...

We have no salt, no plows, and no one who knows how to drive in the rain much less in the snow.

We're also completely emotionally unprepared for this sort of thing. In Texas, any amount of snow is a huge deal and people just don't know how to handle it.

I will say that I was out driving in it this morning at about 8:30, and found it to be pretty crappy. There's almost no sand out anywhere, and the snow is packed down hard on the roads, not melting.

I35 had one melted lane, so we all went single file, but I found some of the surface streets impassable due to traction. People simply could not get up any of the hills and if they started going down, they could not stop.

I made it from the Haven to my place, but at one point, a hill-induced speed-up made me skid through a red light because I could not get traction to stop.

I suspect it'll all be better by this afternoon, but with so little sand on the roads, I don't blame officials for shutting things down. (Though ironically, if they hadn't shut things down, I'd have gotten to sleep late instead of drive home though the snow to be Daddy.)
