athene: (violet - incredibles)
I have a terrible fear of cockroaches. The last time I saw one in Austin it was on my birthday several years ago and I started crying.

This morning I'm eating breakfast and I feel something on my toe. I look under the table and instead of a cat, I see a HUGE roach. I freak out and grab my breakfast off the table and try to eat it in the kitchen while keeping a eye on the monstrosity. The girl-cat starts to track/semi-pounce on it (what a good kitty!) but she's kind of nervous about it too. [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith is already at work and LP is asleep. I realize I have three options: I can wait and see if Natasha kills it, I can leave it in the house and pray it's gone when I get home this evening, or I can kill it myself. Since I'm not sure when LP will wake and the thought of a roach in my house all day really freaks me out, I go for idea three. I put on my sneakers in case it bolts, grab one of Aerith's sneakers, track it down (Natasha is still watching it), smash it with Aerith's sneaker and step on the sneaker with my sneaker for good measure. Bye-bye roach.

For anyone who knows me, you know this is a HUGE deal, because I don't think I've ever killed a large one before in my life. I usually just run screaming and make someone else do it ([livejournal.com profile] queencimmy was killing them for me when she was a little girl).

I haven't cleaned it up though. A brave warrior can only do so much. And my toe still feels gross/tingly.

Bus fears

athene: (blow to the heart)

I have a fear of getting on the wrong bus and ending up somewhere I don't want to be. Almost every time I get on a bus, I triple check the number. However I'm often not 100% convinced that I'm on the right bus until it makes a specific turn or two that assures me that I'm going the right way. This is especially true when I'm at a bus stop that multiple buses stop at. It can be rather nerve racking at times.

I'm pretty sure this fear stems from my first day of 1st grade. I had gone to kindergarten in NYC, where my parents were able to walk me to school. For first grade we were back in Ithaca. I remember my parents bringing me to the near by school bus stop which was where my friend Ben also caught the bus. I remember them telling me that Ben would help me get home. I remember getting on a bus after school was over. I have no idea why I picked that bus. It was probably the first bus I saw. I'm not sure why Ben not being on it didn't clue me in that it was the wrong one, maybe I thought that he was going to get on after me. Of course it didn't stop in the "right" place. Luckily it ended up at a playground somewhat near my house that I recognized and I was able to call home (or someone called for me) and have my parents come and get me. After that my parents dropped me off and picked me up from school pretty much every day until high school, where I was successfully able to ride the bus to school.

My birthday started off well, with a midnight call from [livejournal.com profile] queencimmy, and a call to [livejournal.com profile] daobear and [livejournal.com profile] artemis42.

I want this morning to be a do-over. Besides being extra tired from staying up late (the calls and reading stuff for class), [livejournal.com profile] lordaerith found a large cockroach in our bathtub. As [livejournal.com profile] queencimmy can tell you, I have an irrational fear of roaches, especially the large ones. So, this morning found me crying in terror on the bed while Aerith, who was already in the shower had to deal with it. Loads of fun.

At least I got to campus with enough time to get a yummy frozen chocolate-coffee thing (called a Mocha Javalanche® ) at Prufrock's (the coffee shop in the library).

Class was actually interesting, even though she talked about stuff that we're not reading about until next week...which was kind of confusing.

Remember how on 8/25 I mentioned meeting another Smithie who majored in classics...it's her birthday today and the similarities don't stop there.
Other ways we are scarily similar, with some differences )

For the rest of my birthday, i get to work in the lab, go to an iForum about Katrina document recovery, hopefully go out to dinner, and do a lot of reading.

This weekend I hope to celebrate my b-day better by going to Six Flags OR a Ren Faire AND/OR RHPS. Of course, i have two papers due next week, so we'll see how it goes.
