hot time

This morning when I went to go pack up my laptop I found that she was hot to the touch, which was odd since I definitely turned her off last night before going to bed.And there was a lovely slightly burnt smell. I immediately turned the laptop fan below her on. Then I tried to turn her on and she turned on okay. She kept going to sleep, but I was able to wake her up enough to get to the desktop. Both fans inside the computer were whirring away. I checked iStat Pro and all of the temps were above 100° F. Some, like the CPU temps were above 150°. I turned off Elektra and unplugged everything from her, leaving the laptop fans going (they have their own power source). I probably should have pulled out the battery too, but by now I was running late for work.

The only thing that was different about how I left her last night was that I left the USB cable from the laptop cooler plugged into her. I recently got an external harddrive and Elektra doesn't have enough battery power to run it through the USB, so I've been using the USB hub that's on the back of the laptop cooler. But nothing was plugged into the laptop cooler. Elektra's power cord is on a surge protector...but the laptop cooler's isn't. hmmm...

She seemed to be cooling down as I left, so I hope everything this okay. *quietly freaking out a little bit*

It looks like a lot of people are having a tough week. *HUGS* to everyone.

I'm not sure if this is one of the "old" (POWER architecture) or "new" (X86 architecture) macs, but Intel, for instance, keeps a pretty good set of white papers on "safe" operating ranges for their processors. If I recall correctly, 150 is within the "not going to totally fuck it up" range for the Core2 line (although my memory is based on the desktop Core2 line).

How old?

How old is your baby? Mine has been running hot for a few years now - well warm at least - and he's fine. He's also been dropped, traveled across oceans, been thrown on train racks and so on...

If you have one of the older ones (like mine) the batteries had a recall a while ago - it might be that (doubtful) but it might. My battery is SHOT... probably because I didn't send it in to get replaced because I could not be without my computer for long enough - and my power cable is "tricky" particularly since one of the falls.

As delicate as they look - we have pretty rugged little machines (thankfully!).

Elektra is 2 years and a few months. She generally runs hot, but she's never been hot while off.

I checked my battery when there was a recall. It wasn't in any of the batches. Btw, if you did have to send your battery back, they sent you the new one first and then you would send your old one back to them.

My Mac has been running hot since day one.
I downloaded some software to crank the sensativity on the fans.. but I've had at least one case where it was still running and I left it in my bag.

yes, they run hot. But not when they are OFF.

Plugged in, off, and hot, I'd say try another battery.
