When a coworker repeatedly spells your name wrong (let's say with 1 L instead of 2), even after you've corrected them, is it okay to spell their name wrong in response (say with an i instead of a y)? Or is that just petty?

Edit: I did it. I know it was probably petty, but just this once and no one else was on the email.

well that's just because you're parents are weird and spelled your name wrong to begin with ;)

I used to do something similar with my grandmother (before she go old and nuts). i switched from abbi to Abigail...and she refused to remember...so i started calling her "grandma" every time she did it.

Now I can't get her to call me Gail because I trained to Abigail so thoroughly. ~facepalm~

I've spelled my own name wrong before. That's what happens when you literally don't use your full name for over a year. And, you know, have a father who thinks he invented the Gaelic spelling version of my very common name. But now that I have to start using it for professional reasons, I'm getting better.

I don't see a problem with it.

If you think this person is doing it on purpose, then it makes sense. Otherwise, it's likely to cause a snowball of unfortunate misunderstandings.

Seems like an absent-minded (or preoccupied) coworker might make a spelling mistake without any insulting intent at all. It's also possible that your name is misspelled on some list or other, so your coworker thinks he/she is the only one spelling it right...

one of her best friends has the same name as me but with one L. But I already corrected her about it once. It's my name. I take offense when people spell things wrong.

I suspect it doesn't really matter since if they are the sort of person who spells things wrong they aren't likely to notice you spelling things wrong or at least unlikely to attach any significance to it other than as a typo.
