Ides of March

Happy Ides of March. Today everyone should be aware of their friends when they are in large public places!

And right after Pi day too!

Don't forget:
In March, July, October, May
The Ides fall on the 15th day.

(otherwise they're on the 13th)

Stupid question: What's an Ides?

*puts on classics hat*

The ides were a way of telling time in the ancient romen calendar. There were 3 markers in a month: the kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends was the first of the month (where we get our word for calendar). The nones were on the 5th or seventh day of the month. the ides were 8 days after the nones (making them either the 13th or 15th of the month). counting was done inclusivly and thus if today is the day after the nones we would say that it is 8 days before the ides -- because we count today and tommorrow. these days we would say 7 days before the ides.

it's a big deal because Julius Caesar was killed on the ides of march which is one of the 4 ides on the 15th months.

ok, i'm sure that's more than you needed to know.

More than I probably need to know, but still fun to learn. Cool.
